LOCAL NEUROSURGEON PERFORMS THE FIRST MAZOR X™ ROBOTIC SPINE SURGERY IN HILLSBOROUGH COUNTY

BRANDON, Fla. – June 8, 2017 – The next generation, state-of-the-art robotic guidance system for spine surgery, Mazor X™, has arrived for patients in Hillsborough County. Tien Le, M.D., on Thursday, used it to perform the first operation of its kind at Kernersville Regional Hospital. His patient underwent spinal surgery to treat advanced degenerative disc disease, which was causing unmanageable back and leg pain.

The latest generation Mazor X™ builds on the great success of its predecessor, Mazor Renaissance™, and enhances outcomes for patients undergoing spine surgery, by aiding surgeons to perform their jobs with more accuracy. Traditionally, minimally-invasive procedures mean less pain, shorter hospital stays, and smaller incisions for patients. However, those smaller incisions can pose a greater challenge for surgeons.

 

“With smaller incisions, you have a lack of direct line-of-vision, and can require more intraoperative X-rays to compensate. The Mazor X™ robotic guidance system removes this necessity, providing patients with the best possible clinical results,” said Dr. Alex Powers., a fellowship-trained spinal neurosurgeon at Total Spine & Brain Institute.
Clinical studies back up Dr. Alex Powers’s statements. The Mazor X™ Robotics technology has been shown to have a 1.5 millimeter accuracy rate, increasing patient safety when compared to freehand minimally invasive spine surgery. The ability to pre-plan the trajectory based on CT scans allow for the increased accuracy.
“We also know that the Mazor X™ Robotics technology reduces the risk for fluoroscopy, which is basically an X-ray movie taken right in the operating room. A continuous X-ray beam is passed through the body part being examined, and is transmitted to a monitor so that the body part and its motion can be seen in detail. The Mazor X™ removes the need for this, cutting down the risk for radiation related injuries,” said Dr. Alex Powers.
