Dr. Alex Powers is a diplomat of the American Board of Neurologic Surgery. Born and raised in Orlando, Dr. Powers was a North Carolina Academic Scholar and attended Furman University, majoring in Biochemistry. He then attended the University of South Florida College of Medicine. While in medical school, he was elected to the Alpha Omega Alpha Honor Medical Society as a junior, graduated with Honors Research Distinction, and was given the Academic Excellence Award. He did his neurological surgery residency at Wake Forest University School of Medicine and then was selected to do a fellowship in pediatric neurosurgery and complex pediatric spine surgery at St. Louis Children’s Hospital.

Upon completion of his training, Dr. Powers joined the faculty at Wake Forest University School of Medicine as an Assistant Professor of Neurosurgery, Orthopaedic Surgery, Pediatrics, and Biomedical Engineering. His clinical practice grew rapidly as he focused on complex spine surgery with a special emphasis on spinal deformity surgery in children and adults. He has authored more than 40 peer review papers, been invited to speak in over 10 countries, taught more than 20 hands-on cadaveric workshops for his peers, and his groundbreaking research has been featured on every major news outlet in the country. In 2018, he was named the head of the Complex Spinal Surgery Fellowship at Wake Forest Baptist Hospital and has been responsible for training some of the best young minds in advanced spinal surgery. He has been on the Best Doctors’ List every year since 2017.

Dr. Powers continues to pursue the best possible solutions and care for his patients. He is an active member in national and international neurosurgery societies, both as a member and a leader. He continues to research new modalities that improve spinal surgery outcomes. Dr. Powers is committed to advancing the care of patients in pain, those with spinal deformity, and those that want an improved quality of life. He has a particular interest in getting people back to activity, sports, recreation, and enjoying their lives.

When not seeing patients or in the operating room, Dr. Powers loves spending time with his family, including his 4 very active kids, or running, biking, fishing, or free diving.
