Herniated Disc

Covenant Spine & Neurology provides specialized evaluation and treatment for Herniated Discs, also known as Bulging Discs. This condition occurs when the soft inner portion of a spinal disc pushes through its tougher outer layer, irritating nearby nerves and causing pain or numbness in the back, legs, or arms. Herniated discs can develop as a result of aging, repetitive strain, or injury. Depending on the location of the affected disc, symptoms can range from mild discomfort to severe nerve pain that impacts mobility and quality of life.

What is a Herniated Disc (Bulging Disc)?

Spinal discs act as cushions between the vertebrae of the spine. When a disc herniates, its inner material (nucleus pulposus) protrudes through a small tear in the outer ring (annulus fibrosus). This can place pressure on the surrounding spinal nerves, resulting in pain and inflammation. Herniated discs most often occur in the lower back (lumbar spine) or neck (cervical spine) but can affect any part of the spine.

Symptoms of a Herniated Disc

The symptoms of a herniated disc depend on its location and severity. Common signs include:

  • Sharp or burning pain in the neck, back, or legs (sciatica)

  • Radiating pain that worsens with movement, coughing, or sneezing

  • Numbness or tingling in the arms, hands, legs, or feet

  • Muscle weakness, difficulty standing, or loss of grip strength

Symptoms may come on suddenly or develop gradually and can worsen with prolonged sitting, bending, or twisting.

Diagnosis

Diagnosis begins with a detailed medical history and physical examination to identify the affected area and evaluate nerve function. Imaging tests such as MRI or CT scans are often used to confirm the presence and location of a herniated disc. In some cases, electrodiagnostic studies (EMG/NCS) may be used to assess nerve irritation or damage.

Treatment for a Herniated Disc

At Covenant Spine & Neurology, treatment focuses on relieving pain, reducing nerve compression, and restoring mobility. We offer a range of conservative and minimally invasive options based on each patient’s condition and goals.

Nonsurgical Treatments

  • Physical Therapy & Core Strengthening: Customized exercises to support spinal stability and flexibility.

  • Epidural Steroid Injections (ESI): Targeted injections to decrease inflammation and relieve nerve irritation.

  • Pain Management: Medications and activity modification to control discomfort during recovery.

Minimally Invasive & Surgical Options

  • Microdiscectomy: A minimally invasive procedure that removes the damaged portion of the disc to relieve nerve pressure.

  • Artificial Disc Replacement: Preserves spinal motion while replacing the injured disc with a prosthetic implant.

Long-Term Management

Most patients recover well from a herniated disc with proper treatment and rehabilitation. Maintaining good posture, engaging in regular exercise, and avoiding repetitive strain can help prevent recurrence and promote long-term spinal health.
