Sciatica

Sciatica refers to pain caused by irritation or compression of the sciatic nerve, the body’s longest and widest nerve. This nerve runs from the lower back through the hips and buttocks and down each leg. When the sciatic nerve becomes pinched or inflamed, it can cause pain, tingling, or numbness that radiates from the lower back into the leg. Sciatica is often a symptom of an underlying spinal condition, such as a herniated disc, spinal stenosis, or degenerative disc disease, rather than a standalone disorder.

Common Symptoms of Sciatica

  • Sharp, shooting pain radiating from the lower back down the leg

  • Numbness, tingling, or weakness in one leg or foot

  • Pain that worsens with sitting, coughing, or sneezing

  • A burning or electric shock–like sensation along the nerve path

  • Difficulty standing up or walking due to discomfort

If left untreated, severe or prolonged sciatic nerve compression may lead to permanent nerve damage or chronic pain, so early evaluation is essential.

Causes of Sciatica

  • Herniated or Bulging Disc: Pressure on the sciatic nerve caused by a displaced spinal disc

  • Spinal Stenosis: Narrowing of the spinal canal that compresses nerve roots

  • Piriformis Syndrome: The piriformis muscle in the buttock irritates the sciatic nerve

  • Degenerative Disc Disease: Age-related changes that reduce cushioning between vertebrae

  • Trauma or Injury: Fractures, falls, or accidents affecting the lower spine or pelvis

Treatment Options for Sciatica

At Covenant Spine and Neurology, our specialists provide comprehensive, non-surgical and surgical solutions to relieve sciatic pain, restore nerve function, and prevent recurrence.

Non-Surgical Treatments

  • Physical Therapy: Targeted stretches and strengthening exercises to relieve pressure on the sciatic nerve

  • Medications: Anti-inflammatory drugs, muscle relaxants, or nerve pain medications

  • Epidural Steroid Injections: Deliver anti-inflammatory medication directly to the affected area to reduce swelling and pain

  • Lifestyle Modifications: Weight management, posture correction, and ergonomic adjustments

Surgical Treatments

When conservative care isn’t enough, minimally invasive procedures may be recommended:

  • Microdiscectomy: Removal of a small portion of a herniated disc that’s pressing on the sciatic nerve

  • Laminectomy: Removal of part of the vertebra to widen the spinal canal and relieve pressure
